# Settlement

Payments you receive are added to your Mitu balance as USDC, regardless of how the payer completed the payment. A payment made through an onchain method and one completed through a card-backed flow ultimately arrive in the same balance, so your business does not need separate settlement processes for different payment methods. From that balance, you can settle funds in local currency to a supported bank account or withdraw USDC to an onchain address you control.

## Settlement options

You can settle your balance in local currency when you want to receive the funds in a bank account. Mitu converts the amount you are settling into the supported local currency and sends the resulting funds to the bank account you select. If you prefer to keep the funds in stablecoins, you can withdraw USDC onchain to an address you control instead of converting it to local currency.

These options are available independently of how the original payment was made. Funds received through different supported payment methods become part of the same balance, and you choose how to settle them based on where your business wants to receive the money.

## Payment method and settlement are separate

How someone pays your business does not determine how you receive the funds afterwards. An AI agent might complete a payment using an onchain payment method or a card-backed flow, but the resulting funds still become part of your Mitu balance. You can then choose whether to settle those funds to a bank account or withdraw them onchain.

This separation means accepting onchain payments does not require your business to manage an onchain settlement destination, and accepting card-backed payments does not require you to settle to a bank account. Your payment methods determine how payers can pay you, while your settlement preference determines how you receive the resulting funds.

## Settle from the dashboard

Settlement is currently managed from the Mitu dashboard. A signed-in user can choose the amount to settle and select the supported bank account or onchain destination that should receive the funds. This keeps movement of your business balance under the control of an authenticated user rather than making it available through the same server-side API key used to create customers, payments and other resources.

Settlement is not currently available through the public API. Your API integration can create and manage payment resources and track incoming payments, while movement of the resulting balance is handled separately from the dashboard.

> `settlement.completed` is not currently emitted, so your application should not wait for this event when reconciling incoming payments. Use `payment.completed` to confirm that a payment has been received and keep payment reconciliation separate from the later settlement of your Mitu balance.

## Payment and settlement state

Payment and settlement represent different stages of the money flow. A completed payment means the payer has successfully paid your business and the funds have been added to your Mitu balance. Settlement happens afterwards when you move some or all of that balance to a bank account or onchain address.

Keep these states separate in your own reporting and business logic. An order, booking or invoice can already be paid even though the corresponding funds are still sitting in your Mitu balance, so fulfilment should not need to wait for settlement unless your own business rules specifically require it.
