# Customer keys

When you create a customer, Mitu returns a key in the response:

```text
mcpk_3a6f9d2a6bbc816b11d524fe052b26b7e75fb7b5fa7a1a7d
```

The customer puts it in their AI client, which sends it on every MCP request:

```http
x-api-key: mcpk_3a6f9d2a...
```

`Authorization: Bearer <key>` is also accepted.

## What it is, and is not

```text
sk_live_... / sk_test_...    your server-side merchant credential
mcpk_...                     one customer's MCP credential
```

A customer key:

* identifies exactly one customer
* authenticates that customer to your MCP
* is sent as `x-api-key`
* cannot create wallets
* cannot read or change your merchant account
* never reaches your own API
* is returned once, when the customer is created

It is not a general-purpose API token, and it gives the holder no access to anything beyond the MCP it was issued for.

> **Never hand out a merchant key**
>
> An `sk_live_...` or `sk_test_...` key can create customers, wallets and payment links. It belongs on your server and nowhere else. The credential a customer receives is `mcpk_...`, and nothing else.

## Delivering the key

Only a hash is stored, so the key cannot be retrieved after the create call returns. Capture it at that point and deliver it to the customer the way you would deliver any other credential. If one is lost, issue a new customer key rather than trying to recover the old one.

## When to use keys instead of OAuth

Keys suit products where you already provision access for customers, or where you would rather not put the agent channel behind your sign-in. If your customers already have accounts with you, [OAuth](/platform/mcp/authentication) avoids the distribution problem altogether: nothing is handed out, and the customer signs in with what they already have.
